THBS205 Narratives of Ancient Israel

In 2015 and 2017, respectively, the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) and the
Society of Biblical Literature (SBL)—two of the peak bodies for the study of the Bible and the ancient Near East—enacted policies detailing ethical and procedural responsibilities of researchers when working with ancient artefacts. These policies are particularly concerned with issues of provenance and have a direct bearing on the study of the Bible in its ancient Near Eastern context. This first assignment asks you to reflect on these policies and their significance.

Write a 500-word response to  following questions:

1) Is clause III.E.4 of the ASOR Policy on Professional Conduct a help or a hindrance to good scholarship? Support your answer by considering whether and how the so-called Jerusalem papyrus should be included in our data set.

2) Is the exemption for cuneiform objects in clauses III.E.5–6 of the ASOR Policy on Professional Conduct justified? Support your answer by considering whether and how  the al-Yahudu tablets should be included in our data set.
