The assignment is aimed at honing your fact-finding, and technical reporting and presentation skills which you need to succeed in your Owing to the current social-distancing rules, individual response to the assignment isprofessional career.recommended. However, you may work in groups (each group not exceeding 3 members),but with additional responsibility.
At the end of the assignment, you will not only be demonstrating ability to deliver on the learning objectives for the subject, but also gain useful knowledge about typical construction techniques used for medium/high rise building projects in Australia.

TASKS

In this assignment, you will complete the following task-sets

1.Literature review:

Conduct research through literature review, as individuals or groups, on the construction process for mid/high rise building projects. The review will be such that is required to gain understanding of the following stages of Australian-specific construction work:

Stage 1 – Substructure: [Typical materials/components and the construction designs/methods used for the following].

A. Basement construction:

i. Boundary retaining systems (e.g. sheet piles, secant/contiguous piles, etc;anchorages/tiebacks; and shotcreting)
ii. Dewatering system, including dewatering management plan and pre- & post- dilapidation/condition surveys).
iii. Main building foundation system, e.g.
1.Piling or piled raft, including pile caps/ground beams OR
2.Floating raft.

B. Basement structural framing:

i. Columns (and beams where applicable)
ii. Basement walls (external and internal wall systems, including service core walls/shafts)
iii. Basement level floors (e.g. normal slab/flat plate/flat slab with associated drop panels & column capitals where applicable)

C. Ground slab/podium slab.
Stage 2: Superstructure:

[Typical materials/components and construction designs/methods for the following]
A. Structural framing (columns – and beams where applicable),
B. external & internal walls.
C. Upper floors
D. Stairs.

Your literature study should include images of the key components of the main- and sub-stages of the construction work. ENSURE that in the body of the report you will compile following the literature study that you cite sources of all images and insights gleaned from the literature, as well as compile the sources in the Reference section of your report based on APA in-text citation and referencing styles.

Focus of your literature study should be on the construction systems used for the main- and sub-stages of the mid/high-rise building projects as outlined above. Overall, you should aim to gain deeper understanding of the construction systems SPECIFIC to the Australian construction industry. While reading literature about foundation system for mid/high rise buildings, you should note that ‘floating raft foundation’ used for high-rise is not same as the ‘raft foundation’ used for low-rise. Also note the difference between piled foundation and piled retaining wall systems! [Warning: You may consult CCE lecture notes for insight or guidance, but YOU MUST NOT USE LECTURE NOTE MATERIALS! Doing so will earn you negative marking. Learn to discover things on your own!].

2.Compile a report:

Compile a report on the various sections of the assignment as outlined in the Report Format & Content table appended to this document. Your report should be supported with notes and pictures sourced from the literature, with the sources duly cited. In addition to the sections on the assignment task-sets which should comprise the bulk of your report, provide cover and title pages, Content page, List of Table, List of Figures, the Introduction section and lastly the Conclusion sections of the report. While compiling the sub-parts of the key assignment components, there may be a need to cite in the body of the subsection of the report any external sources you consulted and compile a reference list of the sources using the APA referencing style. Ensure all cited sources are included in the Reference section of your report. Note that the Content page, List of Table, List of Figures should be generated automatically using Word functions for these purposes.

Word limit: There is no word limit for the report. This is to relieve you of the stress of having to find extra materials where the first draft of your report is less than the required word limit or deciding on the parts to cut out where the draft exceeds the word limit. Provide ONLY the key information required in the assignment tasks without ‘padding-up’ the report with irrelevant materials.

3.Power Point presentation:

Next, compile a PowerPoint presentation that summarises the key contents of your report. The PowerPoint slides should be dedicated solely to bits of the sub-parts of the assignment to avoid clutter. For instance, slides on the wall system should comprise separate sets of slides on the designs, materials and construction process for the external and internal wall systems. Within the set of slides for each wall system, there should be slides on the designs, materials/components used and the construction method, perhaps, with more than one slide for each sub-part to ensure clarity of the information and picture/graphics used to support the presentation. There should be emphasis on well ANNOTATED pictorial or graphical representations to minimise the need for long narratives. Any picture or graphics that is not annotated serves little purpose. ‘Annotation’ in this case involves the use of arrowed lines and text boxes to tag and explain relevant key aspects of the pictures/graphics in the context of the assignment task. Remember, the ‘power’ in the PowerPoint suggests having FEW bullet points of the key aspects to be presented; THE SLIDE SHOULD NOT BE A CUT-AND-PASTE VERSION OF THE REPORT!!!
