What is the aim of the pre-requisites for person-centered care reflective paper?
The aim is to be able to demonstrate through either your own practice or observing the practice of others, the role the pre-requisites (see fig. 1)
have and how they affect person-centered practice and outcomes.

How do I best prepare to undertake this assessment task?
Please ensure you have accessed the resources associated with Module 1: ‘A Person-centred Framework for Developing Professional Nursing
Practice’ in this unit as this contains some of the theoretical background to person-centered nursing and associated frameworks that forms the
basis of this assessment task.
This assessment also requires you to demonstrate capacity around reflective practice. If this is an area that you self-identify as struggling with,
please refer to previous units of study where reflective practice models and principles have been provided. A rubric is provided to guide your
preparation of this assessment task.
Writing your reflective paper
Please be aware that this written assessment differs from a traditional essay. However, you are still required to argue your position drawing
upon relevant knowledge that is substantiated with applicable scholarly literature. As a third-year nursing student it is expected that have good
academic skills and a good knowledge of Academic Integrity. If this If this is an area that you self-identify as struggling with, please refer to the
following resources:
To aid this process a template has been developed to guide the areas of focus for your paper. The template provides suggested word counts.
With a limited word count, it is imperative that you communicate succinct, high impact, substantiated points.
You are not bound to using the template- this is simply to guide you in what you are required to cover in this assessment item. However, I recommend using it to really keep the assessment on track.
Choosing the clinical encounter to reflect on
Before you consider a clinical encounter to explore, it is important that you have a good overview of what the pre-requisites are (again, consider the module one content and Person-centered Nursing Framework, see fig 1.). As you will need to align the encounter to that pre-requisite and discuss both your understanding of the importance of that pre-requisite, its role/importance and how this informs your future nursing practice.
As per the unit outline, you have a choice of examining a clinical encounter looking at your own practice or that of another health professional
that you have observed where a pre-requisite may have been lacking, questionable or could be improved. Remember the importance of
professionalism and objectivity within your observations of another person’s practice.
CNA340 Developing Professional Nursing Assignment-Tasmania University Australia.
Please note: if you are writing on the observations of another healthcare professional, do not provide any identifying information. This assessment task is involves assessing your understandings around person-centered care in general. It is not about putting the practice of others under regulatory scrutiny. There is no requirement to feed this assessment task back to your placement provider or health practitioner concerned.
Ultimately, the choice is yours if you and this may be dependent on the environment in which you are placed. Your U/C and FWC may be able
to assist you, if you need to discuss an issue.
Regardless of whether you are examining your own or other actions, you must detail what the impact/considerations are for your own future
nursing practice.
A worked example when considering your own nursing practice: ‘developed interpersonal skills’ This element of the reflection should really harness your future practice. Reflection should be driving your own practice development.
CNA340 Developing Professional Nursing Assignment-Tasmania University Australia.
If your chosen pre-requisite was ‘developed interpersonal skills’, when it comes to considerations for future nursing practice it is not outlining
something broad like ‘in future I have learnt about the need to communicate more effectively in my nursing…’ etc. -This is a given as the
standards require this. Rather, you should detail HOW you would do this, what element of your communication do you need to work on? Is it
saying the right thing? Is it your language skills, is it your active listening skills? etc. It is important to be specific as you are being assessed directly
on your reflective skills in this section.
