Unit Summary
This unit applies to managers working in a range of contexts. It takes a systems approach and addresses compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

Those who have or are likely to have responsibility for WHS as part of their broader management role should undertake this unit.

The unit is relevant for people with obligations under WHS legislation, for example persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) or their officers (as defined by relevant legislation).

NOTE: The terms Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Work Health and Safety (WHS) are equivalent and generally either can be used in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the National Model WHS Legislation has not been implemented RTOs are advised to contextualise the unit of competency by referring to the existing State/Territory OHS legislative requirements.

ASSESSMENT 1 – STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements.

For this task, you are required to identify and research a business’s OHS / WHS practices, then write a 1000 word report that states why OHS / WHS is good business

Details: You will need to consider the type of business you are researching best practices for, as your report will differ subject to the industry and risk level of each business.  You could make good use of statistical information and graphical representations.  Make reference to, and give examples of, any specific areas in where OHS / WHS practices and compliance need up-grading (based on industry levels)

 Your suggested area of improvement could, for instance, relate to ongoing information dissemination, training, inadequacies in existing risk control measures in accordance with the hierarchy of control, or to improving the training format so they are less boring – etc.

Do not even consider stating that your all OHS / WHS & workplace practices are so good that they do not need improvement.  Everything can be improved!!

When addressing the statement that Occupational Health & Safety is good business, consider the concepts of loyalty, caring, trust and honesty, relationship building, employee satisfaction, customer, shareholder and stakeholder satisfaction.

Be sure to also discuss the application of relevant OHS / WHS legislative frameworks relevant to your business.

ASSESSMENT 2 – STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements.

You are required to prepare for and conduct an induction program (minimum 15 minutes) for three new employees of your business.  You will be assessed in a “role-play” scenario, where three of your class members will play the role of new employees, and your assessor will observe you conduct the induction.

Details:

In your preparation, you will need to develop:

  1. A detailed session plan
  2. Handouts for your new employees
  3. Overheads / learning aids as appropriate

You will be assessed as follows:

  1. Planning for and conducting an OHS / WHS Induction for “new employees”
  2. You are to provide a copy of your session plans, handouts and appropriate learning aids

 

  1. Providing recommendations for improvement for each induction session you sit through as a “new employee”
  2. You will be given a question & answer sheet by your assessor to complete after each induction session you sit through as a “new employee”

ASSESSMENT 3 – STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements.

Job Safety Analysis (JSA) simply means looking at the work task and considering what is the safest way to complete it. It is a way of becoming aware of the hazards involved in doing the job and taking action to prevent an injury.

The JSA process is suitable for different trades do different tasks, and need not require enormous amounts of time or use endless pieces of paper

PART 1

Using the Job Safety Analysis developed by VWA, you are to perform a Hazard & Risk assessment on an area of your workplace or the college as allocated by your assessor.

This assessment may incorporate both internal and external areas of your workplace or the college.

PART 2

You are to discuss with your assessor options on how to rectify the hazards and risks identified in Part 1.  Be sure to consider the impact your actions will have, and their effectiveness in terms of risk reduction

PART 3

Finally, you are to implement at least 2 of the control measures outlined in Part 1.  Your control measures must either eliminate or control the associated risks

Remember

  • The JSA provides a written record of the process to be used to proceed on a task. As it is a record that can be used in court, it should be signed off by the parties who have responsibility for the tasks.
  • The JSA is only a written record. Management processes must be in place to ensure workers have the skills to complete the job and that there is a required level of supervision to ensure the tasks are completed as documented.
  • The JSA should be completed by all employees involved in the activity, not just the principal contractor or supervisor.

ASSESSMENT 4 – STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements.

 You are to develop a set of detailed OHS / WHS policies and procedures that:

  • Includes an OHS / WHS policy statement
  • At a minimum provides Policies and Procedures for:
    • Work Cover
    • Manual Handling
    • Emergency Procedures
    • Fire Safety
    • OHS / WHS Representative funct8ions
    • Smoking policy
    • Sexual Harassment
    • Risk management
  • Allows for inductions
  • Details dissemination and implementation
  • Includes processes for hazard identification
  • Allows for identification of occupational injury and disease

You should consider a company type of your own choice for this task.  However, as a minimum, the company you are aligning this task to must:

  • Employ now (or in the future) at least 25 employees
  • Employ both male and female staff
  • Produce a product or provide a service

The level to which this task must be completed is as per the attached HR Document.
